1. Tell a bit of yourself, and about how you became an  artist that you are today?

Hey there! I’m a regular, sleep deprived art student, focusing in commercial illustrations such as products and entertainment arts!

I was never properly educated in art before I enter college nor do I have an artist background in my family, it was solely autodidact. Most of my school years were spent on reading comics, browsing deviantart and japanese artist’s sites (this is a really bad example, please don’t follow me OTL) only after I enter college, I begin to appreciate things that I didn’t appreciate and I learn a lot from it. I’m heavily influenced by japanese artists, children storybooks and a bit of art nouveau. There are still a lot of things for me to learn and I try to do it on my own pace to enjoy the process.

2. What inspired you to become an artist?

My sister was my first inspiration, then my friends from deviantart and the artists I secretly admire! I began to draw, thinking that I want to be like them one day- but it became more than just wanting to be like someone else, it became a journey to find an identity and a medium to help me communicate with the others.

3. What are the tools you use to draw with?

I use wacom graphire 3, Paint Tool SAI, Adobe Photosop and Manga Studio EX4. as for traditional works, I’m familiar with airbrushing, watercolors, prismacolor pencils and copic markers, I’m not really good in opaque like acrylics or poster colors though hahaha

4. What is your most favorite subject to draw, And why?

I’ve been drawing lots of mindless fanarts lately, but original illustration wise, I love drawing stories with child-like characters because I love to focus on innocence / naivety of things (i love how it could be both beautiful and mortifying at the same time)
other than that, I love to draw clothes, organic and vintage elements.

5. Can you share abit of a process in creating your artworks?

I experiment a lot with coloring styles, but most of them begins with creating a clean linework (using tablet or just a sketch on the paper), layouting the color scheme I want, painting all over it and use necessary textures to enhance the feel of the drawing

6. Do you have any things you can share to fellow artists?

When you are in an art block, remember that nothing you draw is meaningless, a drawing you did on a piece of a napkin, a drawing you throw in a dust bin or a drawing that receives a lot of praise and properly exhibited, all of them, regardless on how ugly or beautiful they are, are equally important for artistic development !

1. Tell a bit of yourself, and about how you became an  artist that you are today? I am a recent Dental Hygiene graduate from UBC. I didn’t go to art school because I was afraid that it, and the art industry, would make me hate drawing, or turn my art into something sterile and commercial, or anything else that I didn’t want it to become. I am a coward, but only to preserve drawing and painting as what I enjoy in life. My philosophy has wavered before, because I have a lot of friends who thrived in art school; I may change my mind down the line. But so far, I enjoy the idea of keeping art as something strictly indulgent.
I don’t remember suddenly becoming an artist. I have been drawing for as long as I can remember, since I grew up in S. Korea, where art was encouraged (have you seen their children’s art supplies as compared to those in North America?). I am lucky that my parents fostered this, too, but I was not exposed to a lot of different artists until I was a teenager… and on the internet. I think I seriously started wanting to improve when I was around 17 years old. I am 22 now, but still nowhere I want to be, so I keep working at it. :)

2. What inspired you to become an artist?
Cartoons, nature, and the artists behind everything that we enjoy.

3. What are the tools you use to draw with?My favourite tool that I use to draw is a pencil (and eraser). I usually create CG’s with my Wacom Graphire and Paint Tool SAI, facilitated by Adobe Photoshop 7.0.

4. What is your most favorite subject to draw, And why? This is a generic answer, but I love drawing people (albeit in my “anime” style). I especially love drawing their expressions, be they expressed with their faces or body language. I also like to draw things that flow in the wind… like hair, and loose fabric.

5. Can you share abit of a process in creating your artworks?

It is not very interesting, or consistent, since I am still experimenting. They all start with a sketch in pencil. Then I choose to either ink it on a separate layer in SAI, or go straight to colouring beneath it. Then I often merge the lines and colours because I like the feeling of painting on one layer; the colours and lines become more cohesive, but I haven’t found an efficient way to render stuff like that hahah.

6. Do you have any things you can share to fellow artists?

You don’t have to draw constantly to improve. Sometimes, improvement is silent? Dormant? I am not sure… but it happens when you let yourself observe and digest everything that’s around you.

1. Tell a bit of yourself, and about how you became an  artist that you are today?
Hello and thank you for giving me this opportunity! I’m a 17 year old (almost 18) who just graduated from highschool and is going into university. My mother was an animator back in Korea, and always had picture of characters she drew on our walls when I was little. Ever since then, I started mimicking her drawings/Disney/other cartoons, though I didn’t draw creatively. It wasn’t until grade when my friend showed me her “How To Draw Manga” books that I started drawing on my own! Later on, I went on sites like gaiaonline and deviantart and started drawing on a daily basis. I think it was because of amazing artists I saw online that motivated me to get better!

2. What inspired you to become an artist?I think the most impact I got was from my family members and friends, especially my mother and sister. Even though my sister doesn’t draw anymore, we used to draw for each other and share stories! Nowadays, artists friends and idols I’ve met online motivate me to improve and work harder to become a better artist!

3. What are the tools you use to draw with?

I like using 0.3/0.5mm mechanical pencils, a Wacom Graphire tablet, Photoshop CS2, and paint tool SAI. Occasionally, I work with pencil crayons, watercolours, and acrylics.

4. What is your most favorite subject to draw, And why?

Top three things I like drawing (in no particular order) are girls, flowers, and clouds. It’s probably because they are the most fun to draw!

5. Can you share abit of a process in creating your artworks? This is the most basic steps I take! : click image

6. Do you have any things you can share to fellow artists? You should draw because you want, and like to draw! Don’t put yourself in competition with other artists too much…it might backfire at you! Working at your own pace is a good thing!
